Went Bengal CM writes to Modi for Harsher Penalties for Sexual Assault (Unpublished)

As the state of West Bengal, and the entire Indian subcontinent, reels from the horrific rape of a junior doctor in Kolkata, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging for harsher penalties and laws against sexual assault. The letter from the CM comes amid massive outrage and unprecedented protests in the state against Mamata Banerjee’s government over the rape and subsequent death of a doctor at a government hospital in Kolkata.
The country's Supreme Court has also issued a statement against the CM and her government, saying that it was "unable to comprehend" how the government was not equipped to handle the issue of vandalism at the hospital.
Mamata Banerjee had earlier placed blame on Narendra Modi and the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party for the vandalism at the hospital and has even put forth accusations that they were trying to destroy evidence.
The rape case has been handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), India’s premier agency, following an order by the High Court in Kolkata. The court stated that it had observed serious lapses by the hospital administration.
The CBI has now approached the Kolkata High Court to seek permission to use a polygraph test on Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, and four other doctors. They were granted permission by a special court to do so.
A CBI official was quoted as saying that the case in Kolkata was not actually a gang rape and that the only person responsible for the crime is Sanjay Roy, who has already been arrested.
