Key Senate Races to Look Out for on November 5th (Unpublished)

The upcoming presidential election could prove to be historic. We could see the first woman take over the Oval Office, or we could see the first president since Grover Cleveland to serve non-consecutive terms in office. This week, all eyes are locked onto the American election.

However, alongside the Oval Office being up for grabs, there are also a fair few Senate seats available on November 5th. Having a majority in the Senate is what gives the president the ability to actually govern and enact policy.

The U.S. Senate has 100 seats, and currently, the Democrats hold the majority by a thread, as the Senate is split 51-49. When election day comes around, 34 of the Democrat-held 51 Senate seats will be available for the taking. Below are some of the states that I think will see a close contest.

Montana - The one senator from the Treasure State is incumbent Jon Tester, a working farmer. Montana has gone red twice in the last two presidential elections. He will be facing off against former Navy SEAL turned CEO Tim Sheehy. Sheehy also seems to be leading in the opinion polls, but there is some doubt over his winning the seat, as there have been accusations that the former SEAL has been fibbing about the injuries he sustained while he was deployed.

Ohio - Senior Senator Sherrod Brown is looking to extend his stay in the Capitol by another six years after already having served 17 years. However, Ohio also went red in the previous two elections. Senator Brown will be up against Colombian-born car dealer Bernie Moreno. Brown is a big advocate of abortion rights and was campaigning for it when, in 2022, voters decided to continue access to abortion in what most consider a conservative state.

Pennsylvania - The Keystone State is primed to be a key swing state in the upcoming election, and Democratic incumbent Bob Casey Jr. is gunning for re-election. Standing against Senator Casey is Republican businessman David McCormick. McCormick has spoken at a number of Trump rallies, including one in Butler where he was almost assassinated. The majority of polls put Casey in front, but it is too close to confidently call the seat blue.

Michigan - Senior Senator Debbie Stabenow has decided not to run this term, bringing her 30-year stint in the Senate to an end. A once easy Democratic seat has now turned into an opportunity for the GOP. It’s CIA vs. FBI for this seat, as former CIA analyst Elissa Slotkin fights for the blue corner, and former FBI special agent Mike Rogers represents the red corner.
